Some crate engines are almost exact duplicates of original vehicle engines. Others come with various upgrades such as more powerful horsepower or larger displacements. Remanufactured engines are used engines that have been completely rebuilt to attain specifications equivalent to new engines, meeting or even exceeding OEM engine specifications. Remanufactured engines are more ecologically friendly since they recycle engine parts and reduce scrap.

Our mechanic recommends caution in choosing a used engine that has not been remanufactured, especially if it has high mileage or if it comes from a junked vehicle. He says buying a low cost used engine from a salvage yard would only be acceptable if the yard guarantees it and the engine has low mileage of not more than 60,000 miles.

Of course, when you replace your engine with a crate engine, a remanufactured engine or a used engine, you have to make sure that everything is compatible, from the engine management system to sensors and wiring harness. You may need professional help with this because engine designs and calibrations differ from year to year.

The best option, of course, is to avoid engine repair or replacement by keeping your vehicle and its engine in perfect running condition through proper maintenance. Auto oil change, for example, is very important to give your engine longer life. Whenever you need new car parts, make sure to use only brands that have been proven to be of the highest quality, such as AC Delco.

Car Engine Oil

It is normal for engines to consume some car engine oil during operation. If the Oil Pressure warning light glows continuously, check the car engine oil level and add the recommended grade of oil if necessary. Use Mahindra Maximile Premium Engine Oil only. It is ideal for your Mahindra Xylo.

Note:

Car Engine oil consumption depends upon the viscosity and quality of the oil, and upon the conditions in which the vehicle is driven. Oil consumption will be more during high speed driving and frequent acceleration and deceleration. A new engine will consume more car engine oil since its pistons, piston rings and cylinder walls are not conditioned.

Battery

If the battery terminal is corroded, wash it with a solution of warm water and baking soda.

Check the battery exterior for corroded and loose terminal connections.

Be sure the engine and all accessories are turned ‘OFF’ before performing maintenance.

Always disconnect the negative terminal cable first from the battery.

Check the electrolyte level at intervals of 3 months. If the level is below the lower marker, add distilled water until the level reaches the upper marker.

Tires

Inspect your vehicle’s tires by performing the following checks.

Measure the air pressure with a tire gauge. Adjust, if necessary.

Check for abnormal wear, cracks and any damage. If a tire shows abnormal wear, have it inspected by your Mahindra Dealer. Replace, if needed.

Increasing Fuel Efficiency

Sudden bursts of speed can prove costly. Accelerate steadily, brake gradually. Plan your trip and pace your speed. And avoid high traffic density roads. Rolling in neutral saves 15-20 cc of fuel. Take your foot off the clutch pedal if you’re not shifting gears. And when you do use it, remember to depress it completely. Remove the 3rd row to reduce fuel usage. Fill only as much fuel as needed. It reduces extra weight, unwanted spillage and evaporation losses. Dirt soaks up fuel. Remove dirt from wheel arches, drip rails and other such places. It could reduce weight by almost 15 kg. Go easy on accessories.

Accessories such as roof carriers and bumper extensions drag down fuel efficiency. Listen to music and save fuel – When stuck in traffic, turn off the engine and switch on the car deck.

Choose the right fuel. Your vehicle is designed to take regular unleaded fuel, which will have this symbol (87) on the pump at the gas station. The 87 symbol refers to the level of octane in the fuel. Using lower grade of fuel will jack up your car engine and will cause heavy knocking, which could easily damage your engine. I drive a Ford Tempo, and my car owner manual says to use the 87 grade of gas.

Higher grade fuels will protect your fuel system from rusting and protect against fuel lock in the fuel system (causes engine to hesitate/stall and hard to restart). In addition, it will minimize fuel deposits in fuel injection system, and prevent your engine from knocking/pinging.

Higher grade fuels will also prevent the fuel system from “gumming up” when not run for long periods of time, not to mention help your, Ford Tempo perhaps, start more easily in winter while assisting in help the prevention of freezing fuel lines.

Tips to increase gas mileage include not driving at life-threatening highway speeds can dramatically lower your fuel economy. It maybe fun, but it’s the car that you don’t see that will do the most damage. Gradually increasing your speed will save you precious fuel. And the way gas prices have been, it is nice not having to cram all your money into your gas tank. Extended idling of your engine will lower your miles per gallon.

Diesel Vehicles Require Careful Maintenance

Most people are aware that diesel engines get better gas consumption than gas engines. They burn fuel more efficiently than gas engines so they require less fuel. But the added fuel efficiency comes with a price. Diesel engines are much heavier than gas engines in order to sustain the stress of higher compression ratios.

Diesel engines have better pull in the gears, which reduces the need for constant gear changing. But they typically vibrate more and are noisier under the hood. They also accelerate more slowly than petrol-driven cars. So there are some downsides to driving a diesel. You gain fuel efficiency and your environmental brownie points while sacrificing some speed and peacefulness when driving.

But fear not, there are many newer technologies that allow diesels to overcome some of these short-fallings. Turbo diesel engines accelerate quickly, and other technological improvements have resulted in diesel-powered cars that are much quieter and pleasant to drive than their predecessors.

What are the green benefits of diesel? They typically deliver twenty to forty percent better gas mileage than gasoline-powered models. They also emit one third less carbon dioxide (Popular Science, May 2007).

Interestingly, diesel engines don’t have an ignition system, so they don’t need to be tuned up. And because diesel isn’t as corrosive as gas, the exhaust system on a diesel vehicle lasts much longer. Diesel engines are work horses and are often found in industrial vehicles.

While they do experience greater longevity than gas-powered engines, they do require careful, periodic maintenance. The oil needs to be changed more often because it gets dirtier faster. This is probably because diesel fuel isn’t as refined as gasoline. The air filter also needs to be changed at least once a year. The glow plugs also should be replaced at least every two years.

If the vehicle will be operating in a cold climate, a block heater may need to be installed to ensure success when starting in the cold. This is even more necessary in diesel engines because they use thicker, heavy grade oil

Diesel engines are built to last. If you take care of yours, it will be around for a long time. Since it typically costs more to service a diesel vehicle than a gas-powered one, you should follow a regular maintenance schedule. Take care of any small problems before they turn into costly ones. With impressive new technologies, increasing environmental awareness, and sky-rocketing gas prices, there is no question that diesel vehicles will always be in demand.
