Cost

Due to the high compression ratios and resulting high cylinder pressure in diesel engines, they must be built to withstand a lot more punishment than gas engines. When it comes to the price, gas wins this one by far. Diesel costs a lot more to own than gas, which is one of the main reasons why people tend to choose gas over diesel.

Despite many improvements in noise isolation and engine noise technology in trucks over the last 10 years, diesels are still much louder and shake more than gasoline powered vehicles. At idle, the clatter and shake of diesel vehicles are clearly noticeable, while it can be hard to tell if the gas engine is even running.

Cold weather

If you’ve tried to start a diesel engine on a cold day, you know that gas is by far easier to start. Diesels don’t have spark plugs like gas engines do, as the fuel is ignited once it’s injected into the cylinder that is already under pressure. When it gets cold, the air isn’t hot enough to ignite the diesel fuel.

Maintenance

Maintenance on a diesel vehicle is more expensive, thanks to many things including the larger volume of oil in the engine and the fact that fuel filters and water separators must be serviced more often than gas vehicles. Gasoline engines have a bigger advantage due to extended service periods on spark plugs, engine oil, and even antifreeze.

Making that final choice between gas and diesel comes down to what you’ll do with your vehicle and where you live. If you use your vehicle for quick, fast acceleration and rarely ever haul heavy loads, and don’t plan to keep your vehicle past 100,000 miles, you may want to consider buying a gasoline vehicle.

Gas runs smoother, fuel is easier to find, and they are easier to start in cold weather. On the other hand, if you plan to tow, value good fuel economy and plan on racking up a lot of miles, then you’ll want to buy a diesel.

Price is also an important consideration, as diesel vehicles can be a bit more expensive than gas. If you aren’t worried about price, then diesel may be your best bet. For trucks, diesel is by far the superior choice for those who like to haul heavy loads on a frequent basis.

Eco Friendly Clean Green Driving – Endless Car Fuel Saving Tips Part3

At the time of writing this article, the Dow plunged another 500 points and we are now around 8,500 points. How much have we lost in our stocks, home values and how much disposable income can we squeeze from our existing situation to save and spend less? You exceptionally feel the crunch when you belong to the middle income household, paying a hefty home loan installment, private schools for your children and 2 cars loans.

Today, we continue with part 3 of this series of “Endless Money & Fuel Saving Car Tips” to help you tie over this long recession period. Check out the following simple yet proven effective ways on achieving fuel efficiency, conserving gasoline and attaining cost savings the easy way:

First, if you Do Not need 2 cars, get rid of 1 of them. If your kids need to get to college daily, get up earlier and send them to school before you make your way to work. That could save you a good few hundred dollars a month.

And have you ever considered car-pooling with neighbors who work around your office? If you have to send your kids to school and your wife needs to get to work at the same time, this would be the perfect arrangement, and could even end up helping you fully pay for your gas consumption too!

Did you know that most cars are made to run on regular unleaded? And I got this right from the guide pack from the petrol company’s website! Check it out with your friendly neighborhood mechanic; most will tell you that getting premium unleaded is merely paying extras for cleaning agents that are probably not required. As long as you do regular maintenance checks and tune ups every season, it should surfice.

Get a car with high MPG, miles per gallon. Or better still, check out the GPM, gallons per mile the lower the better. The lesser the gasoline usage, the more miles you cover and the more goes back into your pocket!

When driving, unless you are in the habit of stress testing your engine and gearbox, do not travel in low gears at high speeds. This wears down your gears very fast and hurts the engine performance as well. And, keep good driving habits. Do not reeve your engine before switching off the vehicle. Accelerate slowly when picking up at the stop light.

Never do a jack rabbit start, as it not only consumes much more fuel, it leads to greater carbon monoxide emission and air pollution. Also, you tend to wear the tires out too.

Do regular tune-ups. Check for worn spark plugs, brake pads, low transmission fluid; re-align your wheels, rotate your tires, replace the air filter whenever required.

Do regular oil checks and replace the oil and filter regularly to ensure fuel economy as well as engine longevity. You can also use recycled oil as replacement but ensure that you get them at specialist workshops that does them.

Be a “greenie” and love your environment and save money. Ride the bicycle for short distance travel and whenever weather permit. Better still, walk, the exercise could do you a whole lot of good! And you get to enjoy the scenery too! Always keep your car in good tuned up condition. Smooth running cars utilize much less fuel. Save With Easy Auto Maintenance Tips!

What do we all want while driving? To provide for our families, loved ones, and what have you. How do you accomplish this? There are a whole slew of roads to travel, but one main ingredient is a family car that is always 100% reliable. And if driving creates you running errands faster, to save money on gas, and decreasing air pollution, you win twice. Your 1993 Ford Tempo or whichever car, truck, van, or boat you drive needs to be performing at top capacity.

The most important thing you can do for your car is make regular auto maintenance check-ups, service all the automotive liquids. Oh, by the way, be sure to check your car’s liquids every 2 weeks. That means your oil, coolant, power steering fluid, and transmission liquids. Make checking your tires a constant too. My ex-girlfriend recently called me up and cried that one of her tires exploded driving under a freeway. Yikes. Also, don’t forget to maintain a proper fuel tank level according to your particular car’s engine (see car owner manual). A car owner manual is like the bible of your vehicle. If you don’t already have one, get one. You’ll wish you had one if your car breaks down in the desert.

Your car engine will thank you with better performance and quicker reaction times, which is an essential part of keeping you and your family and friends safe on the road. Make yourself aware of this info. It may save the life of your engine one day. It will save you money on gas and auto maintenance.

Choose the right fuel. Your vehicle is designed to take regular unleaded fuel, which will have this symbol (87) on the pump at the gas station. The 87 symbol refers to the level of octane in the fuel. Using lower grade of fuel will jack up your car engine and will cause heavy knocking, which could easily damage your engine. I drive a Ford Tempo, and my car owner manual says to use the 87 grade of gas.

Higher grade fuels will protect your fuel system from rusting and protect against fuel lock in the fuel system (causes engine to hesitate/stall and hard to restart). In addition, it will minimize fuel deposits in fuel injection system, and prevent your engine from knocking/pinging.

Higher grade fuels will also prevent the fuel system from “gumming up” when not run for long periods of time, not to mention help your, Ford Tempo perhaps, start more easily in winter while assisting in help the prevention of freezing fuel lines.

Tips to increase gas mileage include not driving at life-threatening highway speeds can dramatically lower your fuel economy. It maybe fun, but it’s the car that you don’t see that will do the most damage. Gradually increasing your speed will save you precious fuel. And the way gas prices have been, it is nice not having to cram all your money into your gas tank. Extended idling of your engine will lower your miles per gallon.

What is Engine Knocking

When engine knocking is detected the knock sensor sends electrical signal to the ECU. Directionally as the compression ratio of the engine increases so does the required octane number of the gasoline if engine knocking is to be avoided. Engine knocking is in fact a pulse detonation and we all known what that can do an engine. Thus, the likelihood to engine knocking is reduced and the engine runs more smoothly. Engine knocking is the premature fuel combustion that can result in power loss of the engine. Engine knocking is compression detonation or pre-ignition of fuel in the power stroke of the engine. Engine knocking is normal for 4-stroke bike.

If you have an older car or a high performance car, you may need a higher octane gasoline to help prevent engine knocking and improve engine performance. In order to prevent engine knocking at high rpm’s, NGK’s high-spark #7 platinums are used. Before leaded gasolines were removed from the market, bromine was used in an additive to help prevent engine “knocking”. Motor mount also help prevent or at least minimize engine knocking. There was a need for improvement in the refining process for fuels that would prevent engine knocking and increase engine efficiency. This prevent engine knocking which is very common at the time of a transmission kick down. MMT is a fuel additive, which is mixed with petrol in order to prevent engine knocking. Has been used in gasoline to prevent engine knocking. Lead was originally added to prevent engine knocking. The lead compound TETRAETHEL LEAD was added to gasoline to prevent engine “knocking”.

If anything, high octane gas will help reduce engine knocking in most cars (assuming your car’s manual says it’s okay to use such a gas). Replace Air Filter – Dirty filter can reduce fuel economy by 10% or more. Ethanol in unleaded gasoline helps reduce carbon monoxide emissions by as much as 30 percent. It is oxygen-bearing additive used to reduce engine knocking and assist gasoline burn more cleanly. An antiknock agent is a gasoline additive used to reduce engine knocking and increase the fuel’s octane rating. Thereafter, the engine performance will peak and emission will reduce. Lead has also been added to gasoline to reduce engine knocking. Standard Oil began adding ethanol to gasoline to increase octane and reduce engine knocking. Lead, in the form of tetra-methyl lead or tetra-ethyl lead, is added to petrol to increase its octane rating to reduce engine knocking. Some manganese compounds have been added to gasoline to boost octane rating and reduce engine knocking.
